Inverness City Honors
Freedom of Inverness
The conferring of the honour of Freedom or other Civic Recognition Award is a means of acknowledging the contribution made by an individual, association or organisation to the life of the community.
All awards are decided upon by the Council. Requests are usually received from independent sources within the community. Since 1900 the Freedom of Inverness has been awarded to 21 individuals including four members of the Royal Family, three UK Prime Ministers, one Secretary of State for Scotland, two Lord Lieutenants, one MP and two Councillors. Others included the President of the Boys’ Brigade, the President of the British Legion (Scotland) and the Highland born Prime Minister of New Zealand. Of the 21 individuals, ten appear to have had Inverness connections.
The current Freemen of Inverness are:
HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1953)
The Highlanders (awarded 1953 & 1964)
Tom MacKenzie (1985)
The Highland Gunners(1999)
The Royal regiment of Scotland (2018)
